Radio Waves

Television, 1978

Radio Waves charted the “lives and loves” of the crew at an Auckland radio station, in the age of disco and flares. Playing womanising DJs were musician Andy Anderson and one-time DJ Grant Bridger; Alan Dale (Ugly Betty) made his screen debut as their station manager. Graeme Farmer's show debuted twice weekly in a 6.30pm slot, at a time when South Pacific Television was still struggled to win a national audience. There were still hopes the new show could beat TV One’s flagship soap Close to Home. While Radio Waves only lasted 36 episodes, the show's cast of go-getting urbanites in big collars signalled the changing face of Kiwi TV drama.
