Tala Pasifika was a pioneering Pasifika drama series that first screened in 1996. The Hibiscus is the lighthearted tale of Sefo (Soi Paito Siulepa), a retired grandfather who arrives from Samoa and plants a hibiscus in the family's backyard. Although he has difficulty speaking English, the garden is a forum to explain history and Samoan tradition to his grandson John. When Mum reveals her plan to concrete the yard and put in a BBQ area, John rebels and takes his grandfather's side. The Hibiscus was directed by Whetū Fala, and written by Makerita Urale (Children of the Revolution).
Come on let's make grandad happy. We'll go down to the local garden centre and have a look aye?– David (Jason Greenwood) suggests going to buy a hibiscus
