Carol Hirschfeld: A career on camera and off...

Interview – 2011

As a sub-editor at Eyewitness News in the late 1980s, Carol Hirschfeld preferred to work behind the camera, rather than in front of it. Hirschfeld went on to report for and host many primetime TV shows, including Fair Go, Crimewatch, and the primetime 3 News, as well as producing and directing Campbell Live. She has also worked in management at Whakaata Māori and Radio New Zealand.

In this ScreenTalk interview, Hirschfeld talks about:

  • Starting out in news and current affairs
  • Learning from television legend Ian Johnstone on Crimewatch
  • The challenges of working on the Winebox inquiry at Frontline
  • Suddenly finding herself reading the primetime news with John Campbell, instead of John Hawkesby
  • Producing interview show Home Truths
  • Her approach to producing series A Queen’s Tour, and how she might do things differently in hindsight
  • The joys of getting a cameo role on beloved comedy bro’Town
  • Long hours producing Campbell Live, and her reasons for leaving TV3
  • Joining Māori Television (now Whakaata Māori), and her aspirations for the channel

Interview, Camera and Editing – James Coleman
When I look back and think about that first bulletin, I've completely blanked it out of my head, because it was so nerve-racking in many ways.
– Carol Hirschfeld recalls the first time she co-hosted the primetime 3 News with John Campbell
