South Auckland queer arts collective FAFSWAG introduces Auckland's underground vogue scene in this series of dance battles. Each member of the collective faces off in one-on-one dances shot around Auckland. Urban backgrounds around Manukau, Māngere, Ōtara, and the city centre offer a stage for performers Envy, Fang, Jaycee Baby, Khaos and Tamatoa. Each artist and battle is different: at times sharp and powerful, others fluid and feminine. Distinctive lighting, thumping electronic beats and fashion add to the package. Viewers could choose their battles via an interactive FAFSWAG Vogue website.
It's a form of communication that we grow up in, so vogue ball culture and indigenous culture are able to meet on the floor. And this different thing gets born out of that — this different approach or this different style of movement and conversation happens.– FAFSWAG Vogue director Tanu Gago in The NZ Herald, 8 February 2018
