Whale Rider director Niki Caro leaps into the topic of feet and shoes for this quirky but stylish 43 minute documentary. What other item of clothing carries the promise of such pleasure or pain? Among those exploring the topic are a ballerina, a transsexual, a psychologist, and a philosophical podiatrist. Some of them are acting, as producer Owen Hughes explains in his intriguing backgrounder. There is a also a handy guide to key shoe styles. Made shortly before Caro's first feature Memory and Desire, Footage was selected for the 1996 Venice Film Festival — a rare case of a Kiwi documentary getting invited.
I'm often in pain. Some of the pain I feel is bone deep. They teach you that pain is good, pain is promising. Pain means that you are working hard, doing things right. It's when you aren't in pain that you have to worry.– A ballet dancer
