Heartland - Queen Street

Television (Full Length Episode) – 1996

In this episode of the award-winning series exploring Kiwi communities, presenter Gary McCormick takes a stroll up Queen St in the beating heart of Auckland's CBD. First up, McCormick heads underground to spot eels before visiting a diverse range of shops, pubs and eateries and meeting the retailers, buskers, corporate raiders, residents, publicans and artists (including future screen designer Tracey Collins) that give Queen St its buzz. Archeologist Simon Best points out the Victoria St gallows site and adult cinema manager Jan Grefstad chats about his clientele and rubbing up with his neighbours, The Christian Fellowship.

The good thing about that is of you get tired you can rest your chin on the top of it as well, aye?
– Gary McCormick points out the benefits of busking with an accordian
