In this award-nominated Intrepid Journey, the stereotype of Ukraine as a "fairly grim" post-Soviet country is erased for Fair Go presenter Kevin Milne as he journeys from Lviv to Kyiv and enjoys picturesque villages, rich culture and friendly locals. Milne's visit coincides with Christmas and New Year celebrations, and he enjoys the deep connection his hosts have with their traditions as he fends off yet another vodka shot. In Koloymia he learns about Hutsul mountain culture and feeds a 'pet' bear. The 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster thrust Ukraine centre stage, and Milne is moved by a visit to the nearby abandoned city of Pripyat.
I've only been in the house about ten minutes, and my pants are being pulled off me...– Kevin Milne is strongly encouraged to try on a traditional Hutsul farmer's outfit
