Moonshine (featuring Akon)

Savage , Music Video – 2005

from the single Moonshine (2005)

Moonshine sees rapper Savage team up with Senegalese-American hip hopper Akon, to produce a noughties anthem. It spent seven weeks on top of the Kiwi singles charts. The track's mixed metaphors have long left listeners wondering whether the song is about an intimate relationship between lovers, or a problematic alcohol dependence. The music video blurs the line visually, featuring both interpretations of moonshine. It was shot on the streets of Brooklyn, New York, by African-American director Kai Crawford.  'Moonshine' was one of Savage's biggest hits. It features on his first solo album, also named Moonshine.

I was in Brooklyn, New York filming the video clip for ‘Moonshine’ and some random guy pulled over who happened to be a professor at a university and asked where I was from. I said I’m from New Zealand and he’s like, ‘Man, I’ve got this song from New Zealand that I bought in Japan and I love it, I can’t stop listening to it.’ And he plays it and it’s ‘Not Many’. I’m like, ‘Bro, that’s my voice! That’s me right there.’
– Savage, in an interview for The Spinoff, 21 February 2017
