Reality series Motorway Patrol celebrates 20 years with this 'greatest hits' package of memorable roadside moments spanning from 1999 to 2019. The format is simple — a camera crew tags along with Auckland police patrolling the city's motorways. Stressful situations abound, from a touch-and-go helicopter rescue in foggy weather to onslaughts of colourful abuse from intoxicated motorists. Some encounters highlight the physical dangers of policing while others capture the diverse side of the job, including a lost elderly man, saving puppies and being first on the scene to a roadside birth.
When I started Greenstone in 1994 the first things we did were one-off documentaries that can often take two years to make. You're never going to have a sustainable company just making one-off documentaries; pretty soon I realised we had to have ongoing series that would roll over. So I was really happy when we got Motorway Patrol series two and series three, but I don't think I ever thought it would go on for two decades. It's just wonderful. A real success story. I still feel very proud that it's trucking on after all these years.– Greenstone founder John Harris on Motorway Patrol reaching its 20th birthday, The NZ Herald, 12 December 2019
