Neighbourhood - Pukekohe

Television (Full Length Episode) – 2013

Presenter Tim Lambourne reflects on his Māori and Chinese whakapapa in an episode of this series celebrating Aotearoa's cultural diversity. Lambourne grew up in Pukekohe, the "southernmost end of the Auckland sprawl", renowned for its rich soils and ethnic make-up. First generation Kiwi-Chinese grower Allan Fong prepares a traditional dish using his own produce. Mona Bhana runs a cultural group at Nehru Hall, teaching young Indian-Kiwis Hindu customs. Zambian-born teacher and artist Peter Le Fevre talks about his life, and Shane Snyder shares entries from his Dutch dad's WWll prisoner of war diaries.

When I was growing up here, son of a Māori-Chinese mother and a Pākehā father, Pukekohe was a real microcosm of New Zealand, multicultural, rural, small town and relaxed.
