Putting Our Town on the Map

Television (Full Length) – 1995

This documentary looks at attempts by New Zealand's small towns to attract attention: from giant statues of fish, fruit, and soft drinks, to festivals devoted to local vegetables or wild food. Presenter Miranda Harcourt travels from Paeroa to Alexandra to explore colourful expressions of small-town identity and pride. Shot by Leon Narbey, this was one of a series of documentaries from director Shirley Horrocks (Kiwiana) on Kiwi popular culture. It was accompanied by a book of the same title by Claudia Bell and John Lyall.

The capital of country music. Hang on, I thought Gore was the capital of brown trout fishing. Now this is confusing; Gore also seems to be the romney capital of the world. I think Gore is having an identity crisis.
