Radio Waves revolves around a 1970s Auckland radio station awash with lustful and assertive males. As the first episode opens, drive time DJ Win Savage (Grant Bridger) insults an advertiser on-air, while Andy Anderson plays a hippy jock who raves about connecting. Alan Dale (Ugly Betty) makes his TV debut as station manager Jack. The many women on staff — including new arrival Jess (Jacqui Dunn) and real life author Frances Edmond — snipe and try to do some work amidst all the ego. The show was short-lived, but its urban setting and big city go-getters signaled a changing face for Kiwi TV drama.
Look I chase ratings too, but I’m not going to turn my station into some simpering jukebox just to pull in money!– Jack (Alan Dale) argues radio formats with Radio Waves sales manager Terry Wyman (Derek Payne)
