Silly Love Songs

Ardijah , Music Video – 1999

from the album Time (1999)

Sure to be heard at any good house party that has a ukulele, 'Silly Love Songs' is a sing-along jam that has stood the test of time. The track was written in the 1970s by Paul and Linda McCartney for their band Wings, but Ardijah made it their own with their distinctive Polyfonk (polynesian, funk, reggae & R&B) sound. Ardijah’s ukulele and pātē (slit drum) add a touch of sun to McCartney's lyricism, and the result is a match made in 1990s music heaven. 'Silly Love Songs' spent 17 weeks in the charts, peaking at number one. Director Justin Pemberton's video features many loving gazes plus at least one blazing argument.

...in our neighbourhood usually you'd remake black American R&B and here we are doing a Pommy song. We don't look at the colour, but the song itself. We looked at the lyrics — 'some people want to fill the world with silly love songs' — and realised Ardijah have always been singing love songs or funk. When I looked at the lyrics I thought, 'This is an Ardijah formula', it's all about love songs.
