An Auckland gathering of the Aotearoa Moana Nui A Kiwi Weavers Committee in 1993 provides a unique insight into the highly valued tradition of weaving among Māori and Pasifika women. Narrator Merata Mita introduces some of the country’s most expert weavers who share the reasons for their passion, their battle to protect te taiao (the natural world) and their hopes for the future of weaving. This episode of nation-hopping series From Spirit to Spirit was directed by New Zealand actor Christina Asher, who later got busy as a casting director.
Because we weave, we weave these bonds of weavers, firmly and securely as one complete whānau.– Emily Schuster (Te Arawa), early in this documentary
