Sunday presenter Cameron Bennett travelled to Melbourne to interview ex-pat actor and writer John Clarke, and mark the New Zealand-born comedian's 60th birthday. Clarke says he "couldn't have been happier" performing as Taihape farmer Fred Dagg in the mid 1970s, and shares a story about a 1974 sketch in which he answered a spontaneous telephone call in character. Longtime Australian collaborator Bryan Dawe calls Clarke "more Australian than Australians are", while Clarke discusses the media frenzy surrounding the Olympics — the inspiration behind his acclaimed Aussie mockumentary series The Games.
He's more Australian than Australians are really, in terms of the way he speaks. But he's like that when he's performing, he's like that when he's off and he's not performing. He generally sees something that other people don't see.– Collaborator Bryan Dawe on John Clarke
