After months at sea, English lay preacher Thomas Munro (Guy Pearce) lands in New Zealand, still dominated by indigenous Māori. Settling in a frontier town, Munro must deal with a new landscape, suspicious settlers and his violent past. Once Were Warriors director Lee Tamahori's eleventh feature is based on Wulf, the debut novel by Hamish Clayton. The cast includes Tioere Ngatai-Melbourne (Cousins, Waru) and Dean O'Gorman (The Almighty Johnsons). In this trailer, Munro confronts powerful chief Akatārewa (Lawrence Makoare) and takes in the wounded and vengeful Rangimai (Melbourne).
What was appealing for me was that this wasn't a Māori against Pākehā story, it is a story about how Māori educated Pākehā and how Pākehā educated Māori.– Actor Tioreore Ngatai-Melbourne describes The Convert, in a November 2023 press release
