The Waterfall

Television (Full Length) – 2010

Four contemporary New Zealand artists —Nigel Brown, Melvin Day, Gerda Leenards, and John Walsh — embark on a journey through Fiordland. Their five-day expedition takes them in the footsteps of William Hodges, the artist on board during Captain Cook's 1773 voyage. Individually they craft their own artistic response to the region's landscapes and legacies. Made for TVNZ’s Artsville slot, Peta Carey's documentary follows the artistic process from plein air sketches to the final artworks, as they traverse the sounds. Annie Collins was named Best Editor at the 2011 Aotearoa Film and Television Awards.

What I'd like people to do when they see my work — that you're not looking at the pictures Hopefully, you're recreating that experience of being there.
– Gerda Leenards on her Fiordlands paintings, at the end of this documentary
