Visible Passage

Television (Full Length) – 1987

Just off the Greek mainland lies the remote island of Kastos. Greek-Kiwi writer/director Vicky Yiannoutsos joined her aunt Antigone on a rare trip back to the island, to see her sister for the first time in 20 years. Leaving Wellington for Kastos, Vicky sees history in the island's olive groves, the thin line between living simply and living in poverty, and the island's 'harshness'. She hears of hard times and the effects of family settling elsewhere — both on those that migrated, and the ones that stayed behind. In 1987, just two families lived on Kastos. These days, the island is a tourist destination for those who want to get away from it all.

I always feel on the boat trip between the mainland and the island that I am changing — going into my other world. The island feels timeless, and it’s harshness gives me a new way of seeing.
– Director Vicky Yiannoutsos
