A once famous singing star (Rena Owen) returns to Aotearoa, in need of reinvention. Joining her friend Stephen (Simon Prast from Gloss), she is reenergised after meeting Stephen's gifted drifter of a lover (Dean O'Gorman) and two loved up musicians (Sophia Hawthorne and Nancy Brunning). Invited to a slew of North American festivals — including Sundance and Toronto — Garth Maxwell's song-lashed tale of the young and messed up won praise in American for its characters, images and "energetic direction" (The Hollywood Reporter). Angus McNaughton's eclectic soundtrack includes some singing by Hawthorne.

... the only one we felt could combine true musical ability on the one hand, plus be extravagantly beautiful, talented and sexy on the other.
– Director Garth Maxwell on casting actor Sophia Hawthorne to play singer/guitarist Sally
