Englishman David Bellamy was a world famous botanist, author, broadcaster and conservationist. He came to prominence in New Zealand in the 1970s and 80s with presenting natural history programmes. His trademark beard, larger than life personality and ability to make science understandable made him a popular addition to family viewing time. In 1990 he came to New Zealand to host Moa’s Ark, a series exploring the history of our country’s evolutionary past. Later Bellamy won controversy over claims that global warming is part of the earth’s natural climate cycle.
In this ScreenTalk in 2009, Bellamy talks about:
I was very very lucky because for many years I had an enormous lot of fans watching me. It was back in the days when there were two channels . . . families would sit down; on one day of the week David Attenborough was on, and on the other day of the week David Bellamy was on.– David Bellamy describes his Kiwi fans
