Nathan Rarere - Funny As Interview

Funny As Interviews – 2019

Nathan Rarere landed a presenting role on What Now? in the 90s, but turned it down because he didn't want to be on TV. Eventually he changed his mind. In this extended interview, he talks about working on Ice TV, and more, including:

  • Starting his career hosting the midnight to dawn shift at Hastings radio station 93FM, while still at high school
  • Writing jokes for What Now? after turning down a presenting role on the kids show —  "I was very uncomfortable with how I looked"
  • Presenting TV for the first time on Max TV's Box Dog, a comedy show hosted by a bunch of advertising creatives
  • How Rarere got his big break after Zane Lowe pulled out of co-hosting Ice TV to work at MTV in London
  • Loving the "low-fi" quality of Ice TV — filming some segments on a consumer video camera, and creating graphics by writing on cardboard
This interview was recorded for 2019 TV series Funny As: The Story of New Zealand Comedy. All audiovisual content is copyright to Augusto, and may not be reproduced. Publication of Funny As extended interviews made possible with funding from the NZ Lotteries Grants Board.
