Kevan Moore: The man behind the music shows…

Interview – 2017

Kevan Moore was a driving force behind many of New Zealand's early TV music shows such as Let's Go, C’Mon, and Happen Inn. He also produced popular shows Town and Around, and Night Sky. Having helped launch South Pacific Television and become its Head of Production, Moore left broadcasting to set up his own production company.

Moore passed away on the first day of 2024. In this ScreenTalk conducted in 2017, Moore talked about:

  • How television producers used to get a free TV set to "monitor" shows
  • The challenges of early live-to-air announcing
  • The advantages of getting enthusiasts to present shows — including astronomer Peter Read on the long-running Night Sky
  • Pre-recording Town and Around “as live” — and his thoughts on why the programme was so important
  • How hit music show C’Mon helped develop talent and technique
  • Working with incredibly versatile broadcaster Peter Sinclair
  • The rough and lively style of 1970s music show Free Ride
  • How a producer offended David Frost, the British host of Frost Over New Zealand
  • Why educators were not keen on high school quiz show It’s Academic
  • Looking back over his career

Interview, Camera and Editing – Andrew Whiteside
