Andrew McAlpine

Production Designer

Auckland-born but long based in the United Kingdom, Andrew McAlpine got a Master of Fine Arts at Nottingham University, and co-founded a theatre company. By the 1980s he'd moved into music videos and film. His design credits run to 30+ features, including work with directors Spike Lee (Clockers) and Danny Boyle (The Beach). In 1993 McAlpine won a Bafta Award for Jane Campion's The Piano. He has also collaborated with other filmmakers who have Kiwi connections — including Roger Donaldson (The Recruit), Toa Fraser (the English-set Dean Spanley), Finola Dwyer (An Education) and Paul Murphy (Love Birds).

It's all logistics, dreaming, and then making the dream logistical. That's the addiction. Andrew McAlpine
