All-rounder David Geary began writing at Victoria University, and continued while studying acting at Toi Whakaari. Since graduating in 1987 he has written prolifically for stage (Lovelock’s Dream Run, The Learner’s Stand), and television — from sketch show Away Laughing to teen adventure Hard Out to Shortland Street. He has also had various acting roles, including award-winning short Eau de la Vie, and three seasons on cop drama Shark in the Park. In 2002 Geary moved to Canada where he teaches film studies with a specialty in indigenous film at Capilano University. He continues to write for theatre in both Canada and New Zealand.
...you need some good ‘trench warfare’ stories, to make you a battle-hardened writer. I saw Rob Lowe having someone list how many failures he’d been involved with, and he just shrugged: it showed how much he’d put himself out there, taken risks, worked his ass off, and also had some big successes. David Geary, in an interview with Turbine, December 2008
