Miriama Kamo

Presenter, Reporter [Ngāi Tahu, Ngāti Mutunga]

Miriama Kamo has presented TVNZ current affairs shows Sunday and Marae for over a decade. Born to a Pākehā mother and a Māori father from the Chatham Islands, Kamo grew up in Christchurch. Following a Bachelor of Arts and journalism studies at NZ Broadcasting School, she joined short-lived kids show Get Real, then began reporting for arts show Backch@t. During her first stint at current affairs show Sunday, she won two Qantas Media Awards for a two-part report on abuses at Porirua Hospital. Kamo co-anchored coverage of the 2010 Christchurch quake aftermath, and has presented for 20/20 and lifestyle show Kiwi Living

There are probably a few misconceptions about me, although the only one that bothers me is the notion that I don’t know who I am as Māori. It stuns me really. It’s probably because I work in mainstream media and don’t have a Māori accent . . . But I was born to my marae, have fought for my people and been a student (albeit not a very accomplished one) of the language my entire life. Miriama Kamo, on an interview with E-Tangata, 7 May 2016
