Blenheim-raised Aaron Falvey began making films with friends at the age of nine. Since then he has directed short films which have played in a number of overseas festivals. His World War ll drama The Flame was judged best local short film at the 2017 Auckland International Film Festival. His debut feature, post-apocalyptic drama Northspur, was set to release in September 2022. North American rights were bought by high profile company Lionsgate. In 2015, keen to encourage the growth of a viable film industry in the upper South Island, Falvey co-founded the Top of the South Filmmakers collective, plus a film festival of the same name.
I want to allow filmmakers in our region to have access to a wider pool of talent to enable them to produce the best films possible ... my long term goal is to establish a thriving film industry in the region which creates employment opportunities for our talented cast and crew. Aaron Falvey on the Top of the South Film Production Society
