Frances Edmond was a writer of almost every kind; an author, playwright, editor, reviewer and screenwriter. Her film credits feature a number of celebrated short films, including The Beach (1995) which competed for the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival, and the award-winning Eeling (2008) and The Apple Tree (2016), the later of which she directed. Edmond was also an actor and narrator — predominantly in the 1980s and 90s — with roles in Goodbye Pork Pie, Radio Waves and both versions of Topless Women Talk About Their Lives. She was the NZ Writer's Guild President from 2004 to 2007. Frances Edmond passed away in early April 2023.
I love the way film tells stories: I'm fascinated by how people deal with what life hands out to them, by cause and effect in human behaviour: what lies beneath the surface . . . Storytelling is where the personal meets the political and the visionary. Frances Edmond, on her website
