Hweiling Ow (pronounced Huwayling) hates watching horror films, but she loves to make them. The Malaysian-raised, Auckland-based talent first started to act in her twenties, and appeared in such Kiwi TV staples as Shortland Street and Mean Mums. She has been a producer and director on AFK — a web series set inside an online roleplaying game — and Ao-Terror-Oa, which is comprised of six bite-sized episodes, each offering a different gory story. Ow works regularly with her partner, director Peter Haynes (creator of AFK). She won the Woman to Watch Award at the 2020 Women in Film and Television Awards.
My brain is pretty wired up to come up with weird creepy gross stuff — so horror is a natural medium for me to lean towards. Hweiling Ow on working in the horror genre, Popcorn Horror website, 22 November 2017
