As a child, Maiki Sherman attended kura kaupapa Māori, and knew she wanted to be a champion for Māori voices in media. She first pursued journalism at Waiariki Polytech before launching her career as a reporter with te reo Māori news show Te Karere in 2008. She went on to join the parliamentary press gallery in 2012, serving as a political reporter for Whakaata Māori, Newshub and 1News. Sherman has earned recognition as the 2016 Massey University Māori Journalist of the Year. In 2024 she became the first Māori woman to lead political coverage for 1News, when she was appointed Political Editor for TVNZ.
What inspired me into a career in journalism was that I was part of a generation reclaiming our culture as Māori people, and part of that reclamation is taking ownership of it. Putting a voice to it, speaking our truths, speaking our history, and that goes hand in hand with journalism. Journalist Maiki Sherman on bringing a Māori perspective to journalism, E-Tangata, 10 December 2016
