Kiwi-Italian Paolo Rotondo starred as a serial killer in 1997 movie The Ugly, winning praise from Variety and The Times in London, plus awards at the Fantastic Film Festival. in Rome. Rotondo studied acting in London and Melbourne, and worked as a TV production manager before impressing audiences in The Ugly and 2001 movie Stickmen. His directorial work includes three short films — The Freezer, Dead Letters, Maunga Cassino — plus 2016 feature Orphans and Kingdoms, which follows three kids on the run. Paolo Rotondo and his wife Renee Mark relaunched the Italian Film Festival in Aotearoa, which they have run annually since 2015.
