Screenwriter and actor Simone Nathan grew up in Auckland, before relocating to New York to study at the Tisch Writing School of the Arts. She still splits her time between the two cities. Whilst in the States, Simone completed a writing program fellowship at Nickelodeon and wrote for Taika Waititi's Our Flag Meets Death, before creating her own show in Aotearoa. Kid Sister is a semi-autobiographical series lauded as New Zealand's "first Jewish sitcom". It stars Nathan in the leading role — as well as her real life father, brother and partner Paul Williams. Nathan also has a web series called Mum! and a podcast called Every Stupid Question.
It's good to write something that is more personal to you and is more your story to tell. I think I've been trying to write other people's stories and find books that I wanted to adapt, but a lot of my favourite works by other writer and directors are their story — you can feel when it's them. Simone Nathan, in an interview with Jesse Mulligan, RNZ, 10 May 2023
