Web series AFK takes place in the world of a fantasy MMORPG (massively multiplayer online roleplaying game) à la World of Warcraft — only here the players have become trapped in the world as their characters. Q finds herself saddled with teenage game addict Jack, before finding better company with Maybel — a gnome — and a child in an orc’s body. Meanwhile teenager Brendon thinks he’s finally found the love of his life, until he learns the warrior princess he's met is not who she seems. The group's haphazard search for a way out is complicated by a mysterious Russian player who may have more sinister ideas.
A lot of the humour in AFK does come from gaming references. There’s a lot of references that some casual viewers might not get, but we’ve tried to make it accessible in terms of the basic story.– AFK creator Peter Haynes on the show's gaming references, The Spinoff, 22 October 2015
