Award winning bilingual drama series Ahikāroa delves into the lives of a group of kura kaupapa-raised rangatahi (young people) as they stuggle with money, identity, sex, partying and friendship in modern-day Aotearoa. Since Ahikāroa (translating to 'keep it lit') began in 2018 it has continued to provide a space for fluent te reo Māori actors, writers and crew to make an "audacious" show that series creator and producer Quinton Hita hoped his kids might enjoy. Ahikāroa also explores more traditional te ao Māori issues. Series directors include Kiel McNaughton (My Life is Murder) and actor Miriama McDowell (Whina).
