Barefoot Cinema looks at the "art and life" of Alun Bollinger, whom Peter Jackson calls "the finest lighting cameraman that the country has ever produced really". Goodbye Pork Pie, Vigil, Heavenly Creatures: the path of the man known as 'AlBol' is a growth chart of the Kiwi screen industry. Gerard Smyth's Qantas-nominated documentary is an affectionate tribute to the values of a "good keen man", shaped around his long relationship with wife Helen. Alongside indelible movie images, and tributes from colleagues (Geoff Murphy, Gaylene Preston, Vincent Ward) AlBol and HelBol are seen at home on the West Coast.

Of course, we’ve never heard much about him, which made this documentary a delight and a useful, understated slice of cultural history.
