Behind the Brush studies the work of 19th Century Czech painter Gottfried Lindauer, and the subjects he captured on canvas. The two seasons — airing on Māori Television in 2011 and 2014 — examined more than 40 of Lindauer's paintings, bringing the stories of the Māori subjects to life through interviews with their descendants. Created by Julian Arahanga of Awa Films, the show worked closely with Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki, which holds some of Lindauer's collection and celebrates each piece as taonga.
