Best Thing

Steve Abel wrote Best Thing twenty years before recording it for his second album Luck/Hope. The song features violin and harmonies by American musician Jolie Holland. Abel has enjoyed a long creative relationship with director Florian Habicht, including contributing to Habicht's idiosyncratic breakthrough feature Woodenhead. Habicht shot this video in Berlin. It captures two lovers in varied moments of intimacy — and offers the possibility that it might all be memory or fantasy. The couple are played by US-UK writer Arielle Bier and Dutch theatre director Orion Maxted. 

I wrote that song nearly 20 years ago and it's taken all this time to get a version of it I liked enough to release, but over that time I've sung it at weddings and funerals, and it seems to evoke a lot of different things to different people.
