Bill Direen is a prolific and eclectic writer and musician, whose music has spanned rock, punk, folk and spoken word. In the 1980s, he released a string of critically acclaimed records (using band names including The Bilders, Six Impossible Things and Soluble Fish) on his own labels and through Flying Nun. He also founded Christchurch theatre group Blue Ladder.
