In November 2010, 29 miners died in the Pike River disaster. Later Wellington’s Orpheus Choir invited Dave Dobbyn to compose a musical tribute to the victims. This emotion-laden documentary follows Dobbyn to Greymouth, as he meets with families of the victims, and visits the mine. In the final scenes Dobbyn performs song 'This Love' on 10 May 2014 in Wellington; many of the West Coasters he met are in attendance. Dreams Lie Deeper debuted on TV One on the fourth anniversary of the disaster. Sunday Star-Times critic Grant Smithies called it "one hell of a documentary. Raw, touching and blessedly unsentimental".
I wanted to memorialise the 29 men and to give hope to the families. They've had enough grief.– Dave Dobbyn
