Flying was Australian scriptwriter Charlie de Salis's third New Zealand-made short. Josie (a young Rose McIver) and her distant and preoccupied father (Bruce Hopkins) visit Josie's dying grandmother Emma (Glynis McNicoll) at her seaside home. Emma builds a spiritual connection with her granddaughter, spanning time and memories. Victoria Kelly's delicate piano score is almost another character. The film was nominated for Best Short Film at the 1999 Nokia NZ Film Awards. While based in Aotearoa, de Salis wrote another internationally successful short film (A Moment Passing).
