Friday Tigers (Ngā Taika o te Rāmere)

Short Film (Full Length) – 2013

In this award-winning short film, a young mother shields the stresses of her study, finances and relationships from her daughter, in an effort to ensure she only experiences the fun and whimsy of life. Writer, director and star Aidee Walker is probably best known for her work as an actor, with roles in Outrageous Fortune and How to Meet Girls from a Distance. But her career also involves directing, including a stint on TV show Westside. Friday Tigers won both the Jury Prize and Audience Favourite Award at the 2013 NZ International Film Festival, where the judges praised its acting, whimsy and surprising ending.

We loved the whimsy of Friday Tigers, with its line drawings and a young mother’s delightfully fanciful creation of animal identities for herself and her small daughter ... the story moves crisply, the acting is beguiling, and the ending — a vote for courage and the power of the imagination — is a surprise and a delight.
– Juror Simon Wilson explains why Friday Tiger won Best NZ Short Film at the NZ International Film Festival , 4 August 2013
