Geoff Dixon: Portraits of Us takes us inside the messy studio and fascinating process of an acclaimed Kiwi painter. In the opening excerpt, Dixon explains how a fascination with space travel and environmentalism inspired his distinctive painting style, and is joined by fellow artist Euan Macleod. The two friends trained together at Christchurch's Technical Institute in the 1980s, and discuss how the counterculture of the time encouraged their growth as people and artists. Co-directed by longtime collaborators Glenis Giles and Clare O'Leary, the documentary debuted at the 2022 NZ International Film Festival.
I just started wanting to paint endangered birds, and yet they were hard to find in the nineties. You'd look them up and they're not endangered . . . but now, so much is in a critical situation environmentally, I can paint them all. That's how it all happened. That's why I became a bird person.– Geoff Dixon
