Mean Girls meets Face/Off in this horror movie, which mixes serious teenage angst with serious gore. Shot in Auckland, the story follows Wei (Joyena Sun), a talented young scientist who arrives from China to study at Auckland University. Haunted by a family trauma and a facial disfigurement, she becomes embroiled in some questionable biology experiments, in a desperate quest to fit in. The Grafted writing team includes avid horror fan Hweiling Ow (Ao-Terror-Oa) and director Sasha Rainbow, who makes her feature directing debut. The in-your-face soundtrack is by Die! Die! Die!'s Lachlan Anderson.
The obsession with beauty and changing our bodies has a certain Frankenstein nature to it which has been so fun to explore.– Director and co-writer Sasha Rainbow in an interview with Variety, 15 May 2023
