In 2010 the NZ Symphony Orchestra embarked on a tour of Europe which featured Grammy Award-winning American violinist Hilary Hahn and Finnish conductor Pietari Inkinen. Jeremy Wells invited himself along to capture the tour, which included revered venues like Geneva’s Victoria Hall and Vienna’s Musikverein. En route he conducts interviews with NZSO members, asking them about everything from the long journey of learning an instrument, to sex on tour and transferable skills in case of sudden hand loss. Other interviewees include "groupie" Gudrun Taylor, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and Hahn.
To become as good as you are on the violin it must require an intense amount of dedication that most people don't really understand. Do you ever look back on your childhood and think "I wish I sniffed more vivids" or went to the mall or anything like that?– Jeremy Wells quizzes violin virtuoso Hilary Hahn
