In this 1995 episode of Heartland, Kerre Woodham visits the village of Devonport on Auckland's North Shore. The Naval Base is a big focus of her trip, but she also enjoys the sports, music, beaches and tourist activities of the town. It is an unusual episode of Heartland, in that Woodham returns every month between August and December to experience the different seasons. A running theme amongst the interviews is the changing culture of the village, particularly the booming wealth and tourism — or as one conversation puts it, the demographic progression from "old hippies" towards "yuppies".
I sometimes describe us as "rich hippies", some of us! But I don't think it's got anything to do with money, I think it's got a lot to do with care.– Beach caretaker Judy Gilbert on Devonport's environmental action groups
