It's the mid 1990s and the South Canterbury town of Waimate is concerned about its dwindling relevance. Boosting its profile with a Heartland episode, presenter Annie Whittle learns what the rural township has to offer, and in some cases, what it's not offering (eligible bachelors being high on the list). Whittle visits the major attractions, such as the historic Catholic church and Savoy Tearooms, and in true Heartland style, interviews subsets of the community with vastly different views. Perhaps most fascinating is the contrast between the men's only Buffalo Lodge Club, and lesbian punk duo Mouse and Meshell.
Waimate is a traditional town. Nothing has really ruffled it in the past 140 years: it's just grown older. But recently there's been a feeling among some of the town fathers, a feeling that the world is passing Waimate by, and that Waimate needs to do something to raise its profile.– Presenter Annie Whittle, at the start of this episode
