Greymouth-raised Jan Preston was playing piano before she could reach the keys. After studying classical piano at Auckland University she began composing for avant-garde theatre troupe Red Mole. Soon she was playing Manhattan sidewalks and theatres with Red Mole and related band The Drongos. Back home, she did a brief stint in Coup D'Etat (including singing on their first single 'No Music on My Radio'). She made a new home in Sydney, and by 1993 had released the first of many solo albums. In Australia she has built a live reputation for her high energy, boogie woogie piano. Preston also has dozens of screen composing credits.
