Returning to Auckland after living in Los Angeles, Laura (Sara Wiseman) reconnects with Mairie (Rachel Nash), the sister she hasn't spoken to in a decade. But the road to reconciliation is complicated by Laura's belief that she was once responsible for their father's death. Laura keeps pushing people away, despite the attentions of a painter (Jarod Rawiri) who sees past her brash exterior. Two-thirds self-funded, this second movie from Athina Tsoulis was nominated for Qantas Awards for Best Film under $1 million — and for lead actors Wiseman (Mercy Peak, A Place to Call Home) and Nash (The Cult, The Almighty Johnsons).
[Director Athina Tsoulis] wanted to show two sides of how people deal with family grief: one rejects love for fear of it happening again, and another person surrounds themselves in it, cotton wools themselves in it.– Actor Sara Wiseman on the main characters in Jinx Sister, The Otago Daily Times, 18 October 2008
