Returning to Auckland after living in Los Angeles, Laura (Sara Wiseman) reconnects with Mairie (Rachel Nash), the sister she hasn't spoken to in a decade. But the road to reconciliation is complicated by Laura's belief that she was once responsible for their father's death. Laura keeps pushing people away, despite the attentions of a painter (Jarod Rawiri) who sees past her brash exterior. Two-thirds self-funded, this second movie from Athina Tsoulis was nominated for Qantas Awards for Best Film under $1 million — and for lead actors Wiseman (Mercy Peak, A Place to Call Home) and Nash (The Cult, The Almighty Johnsons).
The most expensive items were two Sigur Rós tracks I had to have, and the next one would have been the camera.– Director Athina Tsoulis on Jinx Sister's $130,000 budget, Onfilm, October 2008, page 12
