When teenager Sam (George Ferrier from TV series Dirty Laundry) is sent home from boarding school, the last thing he wants is to help his dad (The Luminaries' Martin Csokas) care for his cranky, newly arrived, gin-swilling grandmother Ruth. The two immediately butt heads. But a bond grows between them as Ruth reveals her fearless spirit, and a desire to grab life while she still can. Ruth is played by legendary British actor Charlotte Rampling (45 Years, The Night Porter). Juniper is the first feature by writer/director Matthew J Saville, whose previous work includes short films Hitch Hike (2011) and the award-winning Dive (2014).
I felt something special about Juniper. The script was beautifully crafted, it's strong, unsentimental and it pulls you in to its astonishing end. The characters are finely drawn, close to the heart. This is an auteur film, written by the director and with a smaller production team you can go on an adventure in a way you can’t do with big productions. I love this and I was deeply happy to return to New Zealand...– Actor Charlotte Rampling on her role as Ruth in Juniper, NZ Film Commission website, 28 May 2021
