Late Last Night

Music Video – 1976

from the album Second Thoughts (2020)

'Late Last Night' was written by Phil Judd in 1976, and rerecorded for the second Split Enz album Second Thoughts (renamed Mental Notes in the United Kingdom). Directed in Melbourne by Enz percussionist and costume whizz Noel Crombie, this early video displays the band's genre-bending style. Wearing stage makeup and 'medieval punk' hairstyles, the Enz are nightclub entertainers with Tim Finn as a 1950s style crooner. Crombie tends the bar and bassist Mike Chunn has fun playing a drunk. Hawaiian guitars and seagull cries are in the mix, as well as a glam rock freakout and a frenzied Eddie Rayner piano solo.

I saw you standing there at the bar, your eyes were glazed with passion, a look of afar, a secret smile, I blew a few kisses, said my name... is Lyle.
– The opening lyrics from lounge lizard Tim Finn
