Ella Yelich-O’Connor was born in Takapuna in 1996 and raised on Auckland’s North Shore. Showing talent from a young age, she signed with Universal NZ in her early teens and was paired with producer Joel Little. in 2013, her debut song 'Royals' topped the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States, and album Pure Heroine cemented her global superstardom. Her second album Melodrama (2017), recorded in New York City, also enjoyed worldwide success. Solar Power (2021) marked a distinct shift from electropop into indie pop, and was followed by Te Ao Mārama — an EP of five tracks from Solar Power, sung in te reo Māori.
